I tease my mother a lot. I joke about her too. Hey, there’s a lot to joke about. She is a constant source of humous material, and she doesn’t even know she’s being funny – that’s the beauty of it. But tomorrow is Mother’s Day (which she has reminded me of: “Mother’s Day is coming. Hint. Hint”) and I thought I would spend a more serious moment or two so you can see the Neeners I see. Yes, she is hilarious. Yes, she has a temper. Yes, she likes fast cars and drives like she’s practicing for the Indy 500. She loves animals more than she loves most people. But she is smart, independent, courageous, and raised four children pretty much all by herself. She worked waitress jobs, assembly jobs, and whatever it took to keep us well taken care of. She worked long hours and would come home dragging, but help my younger brother finish his paper route. She has helped all of us, not only as kids, but as adults as well. She worked side by side with me, wallpapering and painting my first house as one example of hundreds. And she did it just for the fun of it. She does not tolerate nonsense or self-pity, and taught all of us by example the value of being an individual and not following the crowd. She is a hard worker and she raised hard workers, but she will be the first person to share a good laugh. We all love our mom, and cannot imagine life without her in it. Here’s to you, Neeners.
…she is there for every one of my cooking classes, serving samples and putting food on plates. She also hoards the best looking stuff for herself and hides it like a squirrel to eat after class.
Never let it be said she would pass up an opportunity to get cozy with the Easter Bunny.
Here she is with some of last year’s garden booty. She hates eggplant so this was obviously posed for effect. However, she can eat her body weight in green beans every day and not get tired of them.
She loves to travel, and last summer Dick and I took her to the Metolius River for a couple of days. I have to be careful though, because she is a wild one. She recently told me “If you ever get tired of Dick, I get first dibs”.
She understands that life would not be complete without the occasional happy hour…
But there must always be time for adventure. For example, the fish hatchery..
And it’s nice to have time just to hang…
..or to curl up with the newest Jack Reacher novel. She thinks he’s hot.
HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY NEENERS!! I love you mom. And yes, there will be a surprise for you tomorrow. Your hint did not go unheeded.
